Monash Freeway Upgrade – Stage 2, Soft Spot Emergency Works

Monash Freeway Upgrade – Stage 2 commenced construction in early 2020 and expect to complete construction in 2022. The project includes adding 36kms of new lanes on the Monash and Princes Freeways, between Warrigal and Cardinia Roads. The project estimated value is $1.08b.

With very little time and resources, our team managed to provide the best solution for the soft spot emergency works on the Monash freeway, after Warrigal Road. Our team helped Monash Freeway team with the following:

  • Site inspection of the affected area
  • Complete on-site risk assessment
  • Undertake design optimisation to suit site conditions
  • Supervise construction activities
  • Complete QA documentation
  • Sign off on completed works

The deep strength asphalt pavement design consisted of excavating 600-750mm of the existing pavement and install the following layers:

  • Install first layer of geogrid
  • Lower subbase – 20mm aggregate, Class 4 wet mix (150mm)
  • Install second layer of geogrid
  • Upper subbase – 3% cement treated size 20mm aggregate, Class 3 crushed rock (250mm)
  • Install first layer of intermediate course 2 – size 20mm type SI asphalt
  • Install second layer of intermediate course 1 – size 20mm type SI asphalt
